Phishing is an attempt by fraudsters to obtain confidential information about your banking accounts, for example, through emails, text messages, or phone calls to gain access to your money.
Since scammers impersonate bank managers, to avoid having your accounts hacked, you should:
- do not respond to urgent and threatening messages that require urgent decisions, such as sending funds to your relative who was injured in an accident
- do not provide personal and financial information about yourself unless you are 100% sure that a bank representative is communicating with you
- do not download files or links from suspicious messages
- install antivirus on your devices
- regularly update your browsers and software to the latest versions
- check the website, mail, and bank name in the message for grammatical errors
If you receive a suspicious message or call and suspect that a scammer has accessed your financial information, contact CIBC immediately at 1-800-465-2422.
