Bank of China scams: what should I do?

Bankchart.ca finds out, what to do if a client of Bank of China suspects that he has become a victim of scammers

If you suspect, that fraudsters have attacked your credit card or checking accounts, you should immediately call BOCHK Customer Service Hotline at (852) 3988 2388 (press 3, # and 2 after language selection) and report about the situation.

We advise you to check your accounts regularly in online banking or mobile applications of Bank of China, or subscribe to SMS banking.

Types of Scams Targeting Bank of China Customers

  • Phishing Emails: Fraudulent emails impersonating BOC may request sensitive information or prompt users to click on malicious links. Customers should be cautious of unsolicited emails asking for personal details or directing them to unfamiliar websites.
  • Fraudulent Websites: Scammers may create fake websites resembling BOC's official site to deceive customers into entering personal information. It's essential to verify website URLs and ensure they match BOC's official domain.
  • Phone Scams: Fraudsters may impersonate BOC representatives or government officials, attempting to steal personal information or money. Customers should be wary of unsolicited phone calls requesting sensitive information or payments.

Precautionary Measures

  • Verify Communication Sources: Always confirm the authenticity of emails, phone calls, or messages claiming to be from BOC by contacting the bank directly through official channels.
  • Do Not Share Sensitive Information: BOC will never ask for personal information, passwords, or PINs via email, SMS, or phone calls. Avoid sharing such details through these mediums.
  • Use Official Websites: Access BOC's online services by typing the official website address directly into your browser. Do not click on links from unsolicited messages.
  • Report Suspicious Activities: If you suspect fraudulent activity, report it immediately to BOC and relevant authorities. Prompt reporting can help prevent further harm.

Reporting Scams

  • Contact Bank of China: Reach out to BOC's customer service through official contact numbers or email addresses to report suspicious activities or seek assistance.
  • Notify Authorities: Report scams to local law enforcement agencies or consumer protection organizations. In Hong Kong, for instance, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau can be contacted at 2860 5012.
